Giuseppe Quintarelli Alzero Cabernet IGT 2006 750ml
The child of a cool, dry, sunny vintage with a late harvest, the ’06 Alzero marries muscularity with opulence, precision with poise, and approachability with age-worthiness. It’s an extraordinary evocation of Quintarelli’s cult wine, in sum. Luscious blue and black fruits mingle with brown spices, cocoa, truffles, cigar wrapper, and warm saddle leather in this massively delicious wine. The ’06 Alzero unfurls with a brocade-like texture, blanketing the palate with sophisticated, fine-grained tannins and copious dry extract as it builds to a nuanced, persistent finish that unfolds myriad notes. As with the estate’s Amarone, Quintarelli treats Alzero’s grapes (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot) with the appassimento technique, drying the grapes in single layers upon straw or plastic mats for 60 to 100 days to concentrate and intensify the flavor; it’s also the sole Quintarelli wine that matures in barriques, where it ages first for two or three years in French oak, followed by four years in Slavonian oak.
