Investing In Fine Wine: One Year In

This May marks one year since the publication of our book Investing in Fine Wine, and apropos of this milestone, we’re revisiting some of the claims we made in the book in order to objectively determine whether our market predictions were sound. In Chapter 8 of the book entitled “How to Find and Select a Wine Broker,” we identified fourteen specific wines for investment purposes and listed the lowest domestic retail price for each according to wine-searcher.com. Below is a chart that compares those values against the current retail prices of the same wines:

Wine Vintage Price 3/17, 1 Bottle Price 5/18, 1 Bottle
Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion 2005 $450 $575
Chateau Angelus 2009 $349 $375
Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques 1er Cru 2015 $429 $525
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanee Clos du Chateau Monopole 2014 $300 $500
Domaine Georges Noellat Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015 $250 $528
Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 $400 $649
Futo Proprietary Red Oakville 2012 $275 $295
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 2010 $425 $550
Henri Bonneau Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins 2010 $500 $599
Chateau Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve 2009 $525 $979
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 2008 $585 $679
Elio Altare Barolo Cannubi 2012 $150 $152
Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero 2007 $345 $332
Pian dell’Orino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Bassolino di Sopra 2010 $119 $445
TOTALS
$5,102 $7,253

With the benefit of hindsight, we can see that if a reader followed our specific recommendations and purchased one bottle of each wine early last year, the value of that parcel on the secondary market would have increased by approximately $2,151.00 USD or 30% since that time. Compare that to the average rates of return on other investments like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, and it becomes clear why fine wine is such an exciting and potentially lucrative alternative asset class.
