About Colgin Cellars

Ann Colgin started the label in 1992 with a single lot from Lamb Vineyard in Napa and built it into one of the most closely held names in California. The range runs to four wines: IX Estate, a Cabernet blend from the estate's own vineyard high on Pritchard Hill; IX Estate Syrah from the same site; Tychson Hill, a small parcel above St. Helena on land first farmed in the 1880s; and Cariad, a Bordeaux blend from valley-floor vineyards. Allison Tauziet has made the wine since 2006, with Alain Raynaud consulting. LVMH bought a controlling stake in 2017.

Pritchard Hill's elevation and thin soils give firmer, longer-lived Cabernet than the valley floor. Our Napa Valley Wines and Cabernet Sauvignon pages cover the neighboring estates, and Collectible Wines holds the wider selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different Colgin wines?

Four. IX Estate is the Cabernet blend from the Pritchard Hill property and the flagship. IX Estate Syrah comes off the same hillside. Tychson Hill is a tiny St. Helena parcel. Cariad is a Bordeaux blend from purchased valley-floor fruit.

Which Colgin vintages are the strongest?

2007, 2013 and 2016 are the ones most often singled out for IX Estate, with 2018 and 2019 well regarded more recently. Tychson Hill 2007 and 2012 have their own following.

Who owns Colgin Cellars?

LVMH holds a controlling interest bought in 2017, with Ann Colgin and Joe Wender retaining a stake and staying involved.

How long does Colgin age?

Twelve to fifteen years for the Cabernets, holding well past twenty. The Pritchard Hill fruit gives tannin that needs time, and young bottles rarely show what the wine becomes.
