Colgin Cellars' Cariad takes its name from the Welsh word for love and comes entirely from David Abreu's celebrated Madrona Ranch vineyard in St. Helena. The 2019 blends 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc with Petit Verdot and Merlot, aged in about two-thirds new French oak. It earned perfect 100-point scores from Jeb Dunnuck and Vinous, plus 99 from James Suckling and Wine Advocate. Vinous called it "outrageously beautiful right out of the gate," while Dunnuck praised its regal style, with floral, chocolate and lead pencil notes over red, blue and black fruits and remarkable tannins. Like most 2019s it already gives pleasure, but a few more years will help, and it can evolve for 30 to 40 years.
