Château Angélus, the Boüard de Laforest family estate on the Saint-Émilion slopes, made one of its greatest wines in 2000, a vintage celebrated across Bordeaux. Wine Advocate awarded it 99 points and Jane Anson 98, with Anson naming it the wine of the night at a 2022 tasting at the estate. Now a quarter century old, it shows fragrant earth, iron, cigar box and damp soil over prune, blackberry jam and dried mulberry, with an elegant, fresh, mineral-laced palate, grainy tannins and a lingering menthol lift. The blend relies on Merlot and an unusually high share of Cabernet Franc. It is in a sweet spot now and should keep for another 15 years.
