Château Rayas is the most singular estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, famous for Grenache grown on sandy soils in a cool, wooded corner of the appellation and for the reclusive, traditional approach of the Reynaud family. Its Réservé is the estate's flagship, and the 2005 is a fine example. Jeb Dunnuck described a slightly translucent ruby wine with garrigue, kirsch, raspberries and smoke, then black tea and licorice with air, calling it "a gorgeous Rayas" with a soft, supple texture and a blockbuster finish. Wine Advocate found it showing the more structured, savory and austere side of the vintage. Perfumed and complex, it is entering its prime and should drink beautifully for years.
