Pereira d'Oliveira is a family-run Madeira house in Funchal renowned for its remarkable library of old vintage wines, released only when the family judges them ready. This 1850 Verdelho is a true historical treasure, made a decade before the American Civil War and patiently aged for generations. Wine Advocate called it "one of the finest ever produced" by the house. Verdelho gives a medium-dry style, and here it shows marmalade, quince, dried mango and candle wax, with piercing, spice-laden acidity keeping it fresh and taut. Thanks to Madeira's unique oxidative aging, it is virtually indestructible in bottle and stays lively for weeks after opening.
