Domaine de Montille, the historic Volnay estate now led by Étienne de Montille, is admired for transparent, finely structured Pinot Noir from organically farmed vineyards across the Côte d'Or. Its Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru brings the depth and darker fruit of this famous walled vineyard into the domaine's elegant house style. 2021 was a challenging, frost-hit year that yielded tiny crops, and the best wines are classically proportioned, fresh and aromatic, recalling Burgundy vintages of decades past. Expect red and black cherry, violets, spice and savory, earthy notes with bright acidity and fine tannins. Give it a few years in the cellar; it should drink well from about 2027 through the late 2030s.
