Volnay Les Santenots is one of Burgundy's curiosities: the vineyards lie within the commune of Meursault, but the red wines grown there are sold as Volnay premier cru. Pinot Noir from these limestone and clay slopes tends to be fuller and more structured than many Volnays, with a firm, savory spine. Domaine Marguerite Carillon carries a family name long associated with the Côte de Beaune. The 2020 vintage was hot, early and dry, yet the best red Burgundies combine concentration and ripe fruit with surprising freshness. Expect dark cherry, red plum, spice and earthy notes over fine-grained tannins. Give it a few more years; it should drink well into the mid-2030s.
