Domaine Pierre Gelin is based in Fixin, at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, and also owns a prized parcel of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, one of Burgundy's most revered grand crus. The Clos de Bèze vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin was first planted by the monks of the Abbey of Bèze in the seventh century. 1999 was a large, ripe and healthy vintage in Burgundy, producing deeply colored, generous reds with ample structure, and is ranked among the finest of its decade. Expect black cherry, plum and spice evolving toward savory notes of game, earth and forest floor, framed by firm but polished tannins. Now in its mature window, it should drink well over the next decade.
