Randy Dunn's 1979 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is the inaugural vintage of a winery that became one of Napa's most respected mountain Cabernet producers. Bottles sold in California carried the Howell Mountain name, while those shipped out of state were labeled Napa Valley, since Howell Mountain was not yet an official appellation; the wine inside is the same. Vinous called it "utterly pristine," with bright red berries, flowers, spice, rose petal, leather and sweet tobacco, and praised its brightness and crystalline purity. Wine Spectator described deep layers of plum, cassis and black currant. This five-liter bottle from the first release is a true rarity, ready now and best shared at a large gathering.
