Few Sauternes carry the legend of 1945 d'Yquem, the so-called victory vintage and one of the greatest years of the twentieth century in Bordeaux. Château d'Yquem, the only Premier Cru Supérieur of the 1855 classification, picked its Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc in successive passes over roughly six weeks after late-August rain spread noble rot through the vineyard. The wine has earned perfect 100-point scores from Wine Advocate, Vinous and John Gilman. Expect a tawny hue and aromas of Seville orange marmalade, quince, crème caramel, honey and rose petal, with acidity that keeps the richness poised. Wine Advocate summed it up simply: "The palate is perfection." Well-stored bottles remain extraordinary today.
