Château d'Yquem's 1982 is a reminder that Sauternes and red Bordeaux do not always share great years. While 1982 is famous for its reds, rain interrupted the Sauternes harvest, and Wine Advocate counted Yquem as one of only two estates in the appellation to make an exceptional wine. Now fully mature, it shows a lucid amber color, pure mandarin and marmalade aromas, and an apricot and orange-zest finish with a hint of rosewater, while Wine Advocate praised its "exquisite balance and linearity." This six-liter Imperial is a rare format for the Premier Cru Supérieur, and large bottles age more slowly than standard ones. Serve lightly chilled at a big celebration.
