Opulence defines the 1990 Château d'Yquem, the product of a hot, sun-drenched year that delivered abundant noble rot in Sauternes. Wine Advocate awarded it 98 points, summing it up as "Pure. Hedonism." Deep gold in color, it offers dried apricot, toffee, candied walnut, preserved mandarin peel and lemongrass, with sandalwood and autumn-leaf nuances. Despite its richness, the palate now tastes surprisingly dry and tense, finishing with long honeyed, nutty and earthy notes. Yquem's Sémillon-dominated blend and meticulous harvesting of individual botrytized berries make it the benchmark of Sauternes. Presented in a 6-liter imperial, this showpiece bottle should keep evolving for many decades.
