Giacomo Conterno's Monfortino is the most revered Barolo of all, a Riserva made only in exceptional years from the family's Cascina Francia holdings in Serralunga d'Alba and aged for years in large oak casks before release. The 2004 is regarded as one of the finest ever made, earning perfect 100-point scores from Wine Advocate and Vinous and 99 from James Suckling. A long growing season gave a Monfortino of unusual silkiness. Suckling found dried rose petals and orange on a full-bodied yet compact palate with perfectly managed tannins, calling it one of the most "balanced and harmonious" Monfortinos he had tasted. Now entering its window, it should evolve for decades.
