Château Gruaud-Larose is one of Saint-Julien's great second growths, a large Médoc estate known for generous, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux. The 1985 vintage is remembered for its charm and early appeal, producing supple, harmonious wines after a warm, dry autumn. Now four decades old, this Gruaud shows a medium-deep ruby color with only a hint of amber, and a perfumed nose of redcurrant, orange zest, clove and faded flowers that gains freshness with air. The palate is smooth and fleshy, with sweet red berry, spice and cedar flavors. Fully mature, it is a lovely chance to taste classic aged claret and should be enjoyed over the next few years.
