Château Haut-Brion in Pessac-Léognan is the oldest of Bordeaux's first growths and the only estate outside the Médoc included in the 1855 classification. The 2016 is a triumph, earning perfect 100-point scores from Decanter, James Suckling, Wine Advocate, Vinous and Wine Enthusiast, plus 98 from Jeb Dunnuck and Wine Spectator. Merlot leads the blend at 56%, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc completing it. Decanter noted charcoal, tobacco, dark plum and damson, while Suckling praised a cool, delicate profile with "very fine-grained" tannins. The 2016 vintage combined ripeness with freshness across Bordeaux. Hold until the early 2030s; it should age for 50 years or more.
