Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is best known for its Chambolle-Musigny grand crus, but the Clos de la Maréchale, a walled monopole in Nuits-Saint-Georges, has become a signature of the estate since the family reclaimed it from a long-term lease in 2004. This is Pinot Noir from the southern Côte de Nuits, handled with Mugnier's trademark restraint: transparent, perfumed and never heavy. The 2017 vintage produced generous, charming, fruit-forward red Burgundies, and this bottling shows bright red cherry and kirsch with hints of orange peel, spice and fine-grained tannins. Offered here in magnum, a format that ages slowly and gracefully, it should drink well from now through the mid-2030s.
