Les Combottes is a curious and much-loved Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru, an island of premier cru vines at the southern end of the commune surrounded by grand cru neighbors. The Raphet family's 1999 comes from one of the finest, ripest Côte de Nuits vintages of its decade. Wine Advocate described a fragrant nose of spice, candle wax, strawberry and cherry, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, lush and dense palate of candied red fruit with fresh, harmonious balance. Now more than 25 years old, this Pinot Noir should be fully mature, with savory forest-floor complexity joining the fruit. Drink over the next several years.
