Château Kirwan is a Margaux Third Growth, classified in 1855 and owned since 1925 by the Schÿler family, Bordeaux négociants since the 18th century. 1995 was a classic, structured Left Bank vintage, and Wine Spectator found Kirwan big and concentrated, with plum and currant fruit and a full, chewy frame of tannin that needed time in the cellar. Three decades on, those tannins have had time to soften, and the wine should now show the cedar, tobacco and earthy complexity of mature Margaux alongside its dark fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, with Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now, decanting gently to leave the sediment behind.
