Robin Lail comes from one of Napa Valley's founding wine families: her father, John Daniel Jr., ran the historic Inglenook estate for decades, and Lail Vineyards' flagship J. Daniel Cuvée is named in his honor. The 1996, one of the earliest vintages of the label, blends 73% Cabernet Sauvignon with 27% Merlot, and only about 600 cases were made. Critics noted ripe black cherry, cassis, plum and chocolate with cedar, anise and sage on a layered, medium- to full-bodied palate with sweet, well-integrated tannins. Offered in magnum, a format that has helped it age gracefully, it is fully mature and should be enjoyed over the next several years.
