Château Magdelaine was a Premier Grand Cru Classé on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, owned by the Moueix family and known for its high proportion of Merlot and refined, long-lived wines. In 2012 it was merged into neighboring Bélair-Monange, so bottles like this are now a piece of history. The warm, early 1989 vintage gave a lush, opulent style: Stephen Tanzer found black cherry, chocolate-covered redcurrant, lavender and coffee, with sweet spice, sound acidity and very smooth, ripe tannins. Now fully mature, it shows the volume and glossy texture Magdelaine gains with age. Drink over the next few years.
