Château Margaux, the Médoc first growth, was in the midst of a brilliant run under the Mentzelopoulos family and winemaker Paul Pontallier when it made the 1995. Bottled unusually late, in November 1997, it has developed into one of the estate's great modern classics. Decanter awarded it 99 points, calling it "supremely charming, refined and pure," while Wine Spectator ranked it second in its Top 100 of 1998. Dark plum, currant, blackberry, licorice, cedar and smoky tobacco notes sit on a full-bodied frame of old-school tannin that has softened with age. At 30 years old it is drinking gorgeously, yet has the structure to hold another 15 years or more.
