Château Mouton Rothschild, elevated to first-growth status in 1973, produced a classic, long-lived wine in 1966, a Pauillac vintage admired for its balance and structure. John Gilman has named it his favorite Mouton between the 1962 and 1970, praising a complex, classy nose of red currant, cherry, woodsmoke, tobacco, cedar and ginger. The palate is medium-full and fully resolved, with melting tannins, solid acidity and a long, clean finish. The label features artwork by Pierre Alechinsky. This 6-liter imperial is a spectacular rarity for a celebration; the large format has preserved its freshness, and it is drinking beautifully now.
