Niepoort, the family-run Port house founded in 1842, is known for bottling remarkably long-lived Vintage Ports, and 1945 is one of the most revered Port years of the twentieth century. This wine has always shown astonishing youth: Wine Spectator reported that a rival shipper once guessed it to be 15 years younger than it was. Expect a garnet color with a ruby center, blackberry, black pepper and smoke on the nose, and sweet blackberry and licorice on a medium-bodied palate with light tannins and a very long finish. Jancis Robinson found it smoky and spiced in both flavor and texture, still full of youthful fruit. Decant gently off its sediment and enjoy now.
