Les Pavots, French for "the poppies," is the estate red of Sir Peter Michael's winery, grown on volcanic hillside vineyards in Sonoma's Knights Valley and named for the wild poppies that bloom there. This Bordeaux-style blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 earned 98 points from James Suckling, who described aromas of pine, mineral, cigar box and tobacco leaf turning to currants and black truffle. Full-bodied, round and decadent, it combines ripe forest fruit with earthy, spicy depth and a long finish. Drought conditions in 2014 yielded concentrated, polished wines. Drink now or cellar through 2035.
