Pétrus, the tiny Pomerol estate whose clay-rich plateau yields arguably the world's most famous Merlot, made one of its greatest modern wines in 2009. Wine Advocate and Decanter both awarded 100 points, with 99 from James Suckling and Wine Spectator and 98 from Vinous. Decanter's Jane Anson described dense, fully ripe blackberry, raspberry purée and black cherry with a savory edge of rosemary, coffee bean and black olive, plus a slatey minerality through the finish, adding that it "demands - and should receive - full concentration." The sunny, ripe 2009 vintage brought opulence without heaviness. Still youthful, it will reward patient cellaring for several decades.
