Château Rieussec, a Premier Cru Classé Sauternes in the commune of Fargues bordering Yquem, has been owned by the Rothschilds of Lafite since 1984, and 1988 was among the first great vintages of that era. The year opened a celebrated Sauternes trio with 1989 and 1990, thanks to abundant noble rot. Wine Advocate reported that Charles Chevalier of the Lafite team counted it as his favorite Rieussec, and described a youthful bouquet of citrus, wild honey, mandarin and minerals, with a palate full of tension and vigor, alluring viscosity and wonderful length, calling it "a superlative Rieussec." Still remarkably fresh after more than 35 years, it is drinking beautifully now and will hold for decades.
