Although Williams Selyem built its reputation on Pinot Noir, the Russian River Valley winery has long bottled Zinfandel from a few heritage sites, and Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard is one of its most distinctive. This old-vine planting yields small crops of deeply flavored fruit, and Williams Selyem handles it with the same restraint it brings to Pinot, favoring freshness and detail over sheer power. The 2018 growing season in Sonoma was long, cool and even, one of the best of the decade, allowing slow ripening and excellent balance. Expect brambly blackberry, raspberry and black cherry with black pepper, baking spice and a savory, earthy edge. Drink now through about 2028.
